MONOPOLY’S NEW ERA
Aristocrat Gaming Applies Its World-Class Game Design Skills To One Of The Most Well-Known Games In U.S. History
By Frank Legato
For years, the legendary board game Monopoly has succeeded as a slot theme. It’s successful because of the game’s familiarity to generations of Americans. The game is part of U.S. popular culture and has been for more than a century.
Everyone knows and loves the game, and the many iconic aspects of the game make it a natural as a video slot theme. From the first Monopoly-themed slots released in the late 1990s by the former WMS Gaming to the newest versions, exclusive rights to produce Monopoly slot games belonged to supplier Light & Wonder and its legacy companies.
That changed last year, as leading slot supplier Aristocrat Gaming and Monopoly owner Hasbro announced a multi-year agreement under which Aristocrat holds the exclusive rights to develop land-based slots carrying the Monopoly theme. The first title in the new series, Monopoly Big Board Bucks, made its first appearance in casinos this spring.
“To be selected as Hasbro’s land-based slot partner—after a highly competitive process— is a proud milestone for Aristocrat Gaming,” Aristocrat CEO Craig Toner said when the license was announced. “Our commitment to innovation and bold creativity sets us apart, and we’re excited to reimagine Monopoly slot games for today’s players around the globe.”
LEGENDARY BRAND
Aristocrat’s new Monopoly series is the latest news for a storied brand that has been spread across American culture since it was invented and patented by Lizzie Magie as “The Landlord’s Game” in 1904. However, the game took off in popularity after a salesman named Charles Darrow began distributing it under the Monopoly name with the game board that later filled leisure hours for generations of Americans.
Darrow patented the game board and later sold the game’s copyright to Parker Brothers, which began selling the game in 1935, its board lined with properties representing streets in what was then the “World’s Playground,” Atlantic City, NJ. Under Parker Brothers, the board game gained the iconic status it still holds. However, it was Hasbro, which acquired Parker Brothers in 1991, that began to expand the brand to other channels, from McDonald’s sweepstakes games to instant lottery tickets to, ultimately, slot machines.
Aristocrat was a natural choice to take on the legendary theme. The company’s design & development team is responsible for many of the most popular slot brands in the business, tackling themes of American entertainment and pop culture from Game of Thrones to the National Football League with the same mastery that made home-grown themes like Buffalo the top-earning games in casinos everywhere.

But how did the company follow decades of slots with the same theme from a competing manufacturer? Its storied slot development team capitalized on the fact that the Monopoly board game contains more natural elements that can be translated into slot features than arguably any other theme, from property values to game tokens to the iconic game board itself, all cloaked in the most popular game mechanics of the day.
“Monopoly Big Board Bucks stands apart because it captures the nostalgia of the classic board game in a way no previous Monopoly slot has,” says Dan Marks, senior vice president of gaming at Aristocrat. “From player-selectable tokens and Mr. Monopoly himself to iconic elements like Free Parking, houses and hotels, the experience feels instantly familiar. Players love that sense of stepping directly onto the board while still enjoying a modern, high-energy casino game.”
Aristocrat has accomplished the essence of the classic board game while employing all of the most popular modern video slot features. “Players are presented with triple metamorphic gameplay with Extra Spins, Extra Properties and Extra Houses,” says Marks. “These metamorphic features lead to the Big Board Bucks Bonus, where they have a chance to trigger rewards around the game board and land money bags, properties, houses, hotels, Free Parking and even the GO Jackpot Wheel. The distinctive design with a fresh take on gameplay sets it apart from any other Monopoly game that came before it.”
Aristocrat used its game development prowess to breathe new life into a theme that lends itself to a wealth of familiar features. “Early feedback has been positive, and it’s clear that players appreciate the fresh take on the franchise,” Marks says. “Casinos have also reported strong engagement, with the game debuting as the No. 1 Top Indexing Game- Premium IP in the Eilers U.S. & Canada Game Performance Report for May 2026.”
PLAYING THE GAME
Monopoly Big Board Bucks is featured on The Baron Portrait cabinet, featuring a central 43-inch high-definition 4K curved monitor that allows for maximum impact of all the game’s visuals.
“The Baron Portrait features best-in-class technology from the monitor to the dynamic lighting to the sound,” Marks says. “Its incredible floor presence is the perfect canvas for Monopoly Big Board Bucks to come alive through. We’re coupling it with an all-new eye- catching sign package, the Skyline, with acrylic LED-lit themed panel dividers and dual-tier LED toppers adorned with lit Monopoly signature property game pieces crowning the top.”
Aristocrat has used the “perfect canvas” to create a game that applies signature game mechanics to bonus events that pay homage to everything players will find familiar in the famous theme. The Aristocrat creative team took to heart infusing nostalgia into the game- play experience, building a slot experience that is very similar to playing the actual board game.
Nods to the legendary board game begin when the player sits down at the game. Players can select their token, just like in the board game, from 13 options including the Scottie dog, top hat, race car and others that everyone will immediately associate with the legendary board game.
“Mr. Monopoly,” the character first introduced in the classic board game as “Rich Uncle Pennybags,” is prominently featured in the game as he travels around the iconic game board in the Big Board Bucks feature collecting gold bags, properties, houses and hotels. The Free Parking feature is another inclusion of a beloved part of board game play.
“We saw an opportunity to reintroduce what makes Monopoly so special, and the result is a game that feels both true to the brand and unmistakably Aristocrat,” says Marks.
Popular game mechanics from other Aristocrat hits are crafted into the familiar theme, including overlapping features, the Cash Collect Feature, the Jackpot Wheel and others.
The token the player selects at the beginning of play shows up as a reel symbol and as the token used in the main bonus feature. The feature is triggered by one or more of three collection pots that appear as different-colored Monopoly-board hotels above the reels.
When the main bonus is triggered, the screen transforms into the familiar Monopoly board for free spins that send Mr. Monopoly and the player’s token around the board to light up properties and their value. The goal is to land properties like Boardwalk and Park Place with houses and hotels, and railroads and utilities, which award higher prizes.
If the “Extra Spins” pot triggers the bonus, “+1” symbols extend the bonus. “Extra Properties” starts the bonus with a random number of properties awarded to the player and applies a 2X multiplier when all properties of the same color are collected. “Extra Houses” awards a random number of houses and hotels, boosting awards on collected properties.
Landing the “GO” spot in the main bonus triggers the Jackpot Wheel, which spins to one of the game’s four jackpots, including the top Grand, a progressive resetting at $10,000.
Landing “Free Parking” in the bonus triggers a miniature version of Aristocrat’s signature Hold & Spin bonus. A three-spin cycle locks cash-on-reels prizes, with the top Grand progressive awarded if all seven spots are filled.
All the bonus features are hosted by Mr. Monopoly in a presentation that remains true to the theme.

CELEBRATING THE ROLLOUT
Monopoly Big Board Bucks made its official debut in April at California’s Yaamava’ Resort & Casino, with an “Own It All” promotion valued at more than $1.6 million, featuring prizes such as $500,000 toward a mortgage, $500,000 in travel credit, and a Ferrari 296GTS worth over $640,000.
Other casinos have followed with special events to launch the game. In Monaco, casinos celebrated the launch with a life-sized Monopoly board experience and an appearance by Mr. Monopoly himself. Other casino marketing departments are crafting their own special promotions to debut the game.
“The response from casino partners has been incredible,” Marks says. “Many properties have embraced the theme to create launch events unlike anything previously seen for the Monopoly franchise. These events highlight the excitement surrounding the brand, and we look forward to continuing to collaborate with customers to bring these experiences to life.”
The game is likely to land soon at a casino near you. “Monopoly Big Board Bucks is rolling out rapidly across North America and Europe,” says Marks. “For the most up-to-date list of locations, players can visit www.aristocratgaming.com/wheretoplay.”
Monopoly Big Board Bucks is likely the first in what will be a long-running game franchise for Aristocrat. “We’re committed to expanding the Monopoly universe with new concepts and experiences that appeal to a wide range of players, and we’re excited about what’s ahead,” Marks says.
“Stay tuned.”
