Eric Buksa leads Downtown Grand’s next chapter

By Steve Kieva

With more than 30 years of experience in the hotel and casino industry, Eric Buksa, general manager of Downtown Grand Hotel & Casino, has built a career defined by operational excellence, strong leadership, and a deep commitment to guest service. His extensive hospitality background spans a variety of roles across the gaming and lodging sectors, with a consistent focus on enhancing the guest experience while driving efficiency and performance.

Buksa joined Downtown Grand Hotel & Casino in November 2022 as assistant general manager. He was named interim general manager in February 2024 and officially promoted to general manager in January 2025. In his current role, he oversees all aspects of hotel and casino operations, with an emphasis on team development, guest satisfaction and overall business success.

Prior to joining Downtown Grand, Buksa served as vice president of hotel operations at Affinity Gaming, where he oversaw hotel operations within a casino environment. His career also includes leadership roles as vice president of hotel operations at Nugget Casino Resort and Aquarius Casino Resort, where he focused on elevating guest service and delivering a well- rounded hospitality experience. Earlier, he held the role of director of hotel operations at the Stratosphere Hotel.

Over the years, Buksa has led hotel operations across several notable properties, including Primm Resorts, Nugget Casino Resort in Sparks and Aquarius Casino Resort in Laughlin. These positions further sharpened his expertise in multi-property oversight, strategic planning and large-scale operations.

Born in San Diego and raised in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Buksa credits his upbringing with shaping both his personal and professional perspective. He met his wife while working at the historic Sahara—an experience he considers a highlight of his career journey.

Outside of work, he enjoys golfing, fine dining and spending time with his family.

Casino Player caught up with Buksa for an inside look at his leadership style, the evolution of Downtown Grand, and what’s ahead for the property in the ever-changing Las Vegas landscape.

Eric Buksa, general manager of Downtown Grand Hotel & Casino sits down for an in-depth Q&A to discuss the property’s continued evolution, player-focused offerings, and what’s next for one of downtown Las Vegas’ most dynamic destinations

CP: What does a typical day look like for a general manager?

EB: A lot of meetings—there’s no way around that. While we don’t have the additional layers of management you might find at larger properties, I meet weekly with each department head to stay closely connected to operations. I genuinely enjoy that interaction and the relationships that come with it. I also make a point to walk the property at least twice a day to ensure everything looks and feels right from the guest’s perspective. And, of course, there’s the steady flow of emails that keeps the day moving.

With so much talk in the news that “Vegas is dead,” how has Downtown Grand performed over the past two years?

Vegas is not dead—far from it. We have seen some softening in hotel occupancy over the past two years, but that follows an unusually strong post-COVID rebound when numbers were above normal levels. Despite that, our casino has continued to perform well, and we expect that momentum to continue. Room demand is gradually stabilizing, and recent conventions—especially in January and the strong ConExpo event in March—have been very encouraging.

As general manager, what initiatives have you introduced to drive Downtown Grand’s success?

I can’t take credit for everything—this team is full of great ideas and positive energy. That said, I will claim responsibility for the Hot Dog & Beer promotion, which has been a big hit since we launched the cart in May 2023. We’ve also made significant enhancements at Citrus Pool, including a full remodel, an updated food menu, expanded entertainment and upgraded cabanas.

The Downtown Grand is a short walk from Fremont Street. What does the property offer to entice visitors to make that walk?

We offer a refreshing alternative to the hustle and bustle—close to the action but removed enough to provide a more relaxed and comfortable experience. Guests can enjoy standout value with offers all while welcomed in with a clean, fun environment. Third Street itself has become a destination, featuring foodie favorites like Triple George, Pizza Rock and Hot N Juicy Crawfish.

How would you describe the Downtown Grand?

In most cities, the Downtown Grand would be considered a large property, but in Las Vegas, we’re more of a boutique experience. Our smaller footprint allows us to maintain a clean, calm and welcoming environment. Guests appreciate the quieter atmosphere compared to Fremont Street, and many return specifically for that reason. While our casino is more intimate, it delivers the same quality gaming experience you’d expect from larger resorts.

What is the best-kept secret about Downtown Grand?

Our best-kept secret? You don’t need deep pockets to enjoy a full day at Downtown Grand, starting off with our great room rates. While you’re here on your stay you can grab coffee and a bagel at Art Bar, spend a few hours unwinding at Citrus Pool with a 30-oz. specialty cocktail, enjoy the $20 lunch special or a happy hour treat at Triple George, try your luck with $1 blackjack, try the $3.50 Grand Duo [Whiskey & Beer] and cap it all off with a $3 Nathan’s hot dog and beer. Just like that, you’ve experienced a full day at the Grand still with cash in your pocket. Triple George Grill is one of my top three restaurants in Las Vegas.

How would you describe it, and do you have a favorite dish?

Thank you—that’s great to hear. The Chicken Pot Pie is a standout favorite, even among notable guests like Raiders owner Mark Davis. Triple George has a unique identity—it draws inspiration from San Francisco’s historic Tadich Grill, with strong seafood offerings like cioppino, while also embracing classic steakhouse traditions. There’s even a subtle nod to Las Vegas history and the nearby Mob Museum in its atmosphere. As for me, I like to start with the Shrimp Cigars, follow with clam chowder, and finish with a medium-rare filet. It’s hard to beat.

What can people look forward to for the remainder of the year?

We have an exciting lineup ahead. Our private stretch of 3rd Street continues to host events like Vintage & Vinyl, bringing together vendors and music lovers. This April, we’re introducing our first BBQ competition featuring 32 teams from across the country. Citrus Pool season is always a highlight, with weekly live entertainment spanning reggae, country, EDM, R&B and yacht rock. Beyond that, we’re eager to continue to shape the future of the property.

What would you personally like Casino Player readers to know about the Downtown Grand?

The Downtown Grand offers a unique balance—you’re just steps from Fremont Street, yet removed enough to enjoy a more relaxed experience. We provide excellent rooms, a standout pool, and one of the best steakhouses in the city, along with great value for budget-conscious guests. If you haven’t visited yet, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by everything we have to offer.
