All Aboard for a New Era – The Nevada State Railroad Museum Expands
The Nevada State Railroad Museum, Boulder City, is ready to celebrate a major milestone with the grand opening of its new Visitor Center on Sept. 19, marking the museum’s 35th anniversary. After welcoming guests for decades through its open-air pavilion, the museum is officially expanding its station with a nearly 9,000-square-foot Visitor Center designed to bring Nevada’s railroad history to life in a whole new way.
Home to an impressive collection of historic locomotives, railcars and equipment, the museum gives visitors a chance to explore Nevada’s railroad past up close. Guests can also climb aboard select trains and enjoy excursion rides on the Nevada Southern Railway, offering a rolling glimpse into the region’s transportation history.
More than two decades in the planning, the $25 million project features nearly 3,800 square feet of exhibit space exploring the powerful role railroads have played in shaping the Silver State—from mining booms and the construction of Hoover Dam to operations at the Nevada Test Site and the continued impact of rail transportation today. With construction beginning in December 2024, the new center represents a major investment in preserving Nevada’s past while inspiring future generations.
And the fun doesn’t stop there. Looking ahead to the holiday season, the museum’s popular Santa Train will once again bring a little extra magic to the rails, giving families the chance to climb aboard for a festive seasonal experience.
