“The Biggest Little City in the World” has become a popular retirement option for many Americans in recent years and for good reason. The area just has so much to offer—and that goes for gamblers. Before the Sin City gambling boom, before the bright lights of the Vegas Strip, Reno was the gambling capital of the U.S. Reno is home to the U.S. Mint, where the Silver State’s precious metals were turned into silver dollars and other coins. Much of the history of the West was written right in Reno. The city was the site of the Transcontinental Highways Exposition of 1927. An arch bearing the name of the event was erected over Virginia Street. When the exposition was over, city leaders decided to keep the arch, and held a contest to find a new slogan to replace the expo name. The winner: “The Biggest Little City in the World,” a title Reno still wears proudly today, though the arch that currently stands is the fourth of its kind.
It’s no longer the gaming capital of America, but Reno and its neighbor, Sparks, remain a fun, varied casino destination area. The rise of nearby competition, especially from Native American tribes in northern California, has forced Reno operators to evolve and adapt, and they’ve done just that. The top three resorts in this category remain favorites in the regions and have been in these positions since 2021.
Grand Sierra Resort and Casino has now been atop the standings for Best Overall Gaming Resort and Best Overall Casino for half a decade. The property houses nearly 2,000 rooms, nightclubs, bowling lanes, a movie theater, and has become a destination getaway beyond the gaming scene. This year, Grand Sierra takes the grand prize for Best Video Slots, Best Progressive Slots, Best Video Poker, Friendliest Casino, Best Hosts, Best Penny Slots, Best Comps, Best Players Club Lounge, Best Slot Club Promotions, Best Customer Service, Best VIP Service and Best Bingo Tournaments.
Atlantis Casino Resort grabs second again and continues offering a great gaming experience with 60,000 square feet of casino space including more than 1,400 slot machines and dozens of table games. The AAA Four Diamond resort came out on top for Best Quarter Slots, Best $5+ Slots, Best High-End Slot Area and Best Slot Club.
Peppermill Resort Spa Casino again takes the bronze medal for the fifth straight year and remains a popular choice with Reno players.
