The Hawkeye State set the trend for casino expansion outside of Nevada and New Jersey. Iowa was first to open commercial casinos with the debut of riverboat gambling in April 1991, a few months before Illinois. Iowa later became the first of the riverboat states to ease, and then end cruise requirements, and finally to legalize land-based casinos.

This year’s top three properties are a repeat of the top three winners from 2024. Hard Rock Casino Sioux City in northwest Iowa rose to the top as Best Overall Casino for the second straight year. Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel, a tribal resort located in east-central Iowa, makes it two years in a row in the No. 2 slot. Meskwaki boasts five restaurants, an indoor pool and hot tub and over 67,000 square feet of casino space. Meskwaki finished in the top spot for Best Penny Slots, Best Quarter Slots, Best Bingo and Best Bingo Tournaments.
Rhythm City Casino Resort once again took the third-place spot this year. The property, located in Davenport, offers an expansive gaming floor with a wide range of slots, 17 table games, a hotel with large and comfortable rooms, and great dining options like Ruthie’s for the finest cuts of Midwest steaks and fresh seafood. Rhythm City grabbed Best Video Poker and finished among the top three in several categories.
