WOMEN AT THE WHEEL

Raising the Stakes in Gaming Leadership

By Marjorie Preston & Lisa Robertson-Dziedzic

For decades, the gaming industry has been a world dominated by men— but times are changing. Today, women are stepping into the spotlight, breaking barriers and reshaping the industry from coast to coast. In this special annual feature, we celebrate a number of remarkable women who are not only excelling in their roles but also mentoring and inspiring the next generation of female leaders.

What sets these women apart is a rare combination of vision, resilience and authenticity. They drive change, empower their teams and cultivate inclusive environments where everyone can thrive. Bold, accountable, adaptable and fiercely committed to lifting others, they embody the future of gaming leadership. When it comes to influence, talent and impact, these women aren’t just in the game, they’re leading it.

‘The One and Only Beau’

Since 1999, Beau Rivage Resort and Casino has been a Mississippi Gulf Coast destination. These leaders help to level up the guest experience.

Nothing evokes warmth, welcome and gentility like the phrase “Southern hospitality.” At Beau Rivage Resort and Casino in Biloxi, MS, that tradition, like sweet tea and pecan pie, is served up on the regular.

When it opened in March 1999, the $800 million property, originally developed by Steve Wynn, was the largest hotel-casino in the U.S. outside Nevada. Affectionately known as “the Beau,” it remains the tallest building in the Magnolia State, with stunning views of Mississippi Sound.

That coastal location figures prominently in its history, and testifies to its strength. In 2005, when Hurricane Katrina barreled ashore with 120-mile-per-hour winds, it leveled the waterfront casino and much of the surrounding community. But the 29-story hotel tower remained steadfast. And the restored property reopened, good as new, in just a year.

With premier appointments, an award-winning Tom Fazio-designed golf course, and other attractions, Beau Rivage has been called “Bellagio’s little sister.” Now owned and operated by MGM Resorts International, it is a recipient of AAA’s elite Four Diamond resort designation.

But deluxe amenities aside, the Beau is really about its people. Of 2,800 employees, almost one-tenth have been with the property since Day 1—26 years and counting—and serve hundreds of thousands of guests each year.

In a resort of this scale, you may think it’s easy to get lost in the crowd. But Southern hospitality doesn’t stint on personal service, and a genial reception for all comers. At the Beau, that philosophy radiates from the top down, epitomized by women in many leadership positions.

Companywide at MGM Resorts, the distaff side occupies approximately 46.5 percent of executive roles, well beyond the gaming industry average of 25 percent. In 2023, Newsweek named the company one of America’s Greatest Workplaces for Diversity. Beau Rivage is also one of the most up-to-date: the property is now completing a $130 million, stemto-stern upgrade that spanned guest rooms and suites, entryways, restaurants and the casino.

Ready for a visit? Here are a few of the folks waiting to welcome you.

Since its first flight in 2009, MGMAir has redefined casino travel with seamless service and signature Southern hospitality. The charter program recently celebrated its 1 millionth passenger with a surprise fanfare and now connects travelers from more than 90 cities nationwide to Beau Rivage Resort & Casino.

The Friendly Skies

BROOKE PARDOE, Executive Director of Charter Services, MGMAir

Each year, up to 100,000 people fly into Beau Rivage via MGMAir, a coast-to-coast charter program that serves the Mississippi property as well as the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City. The charter first took flight in 2009. It now offers nonstop air travel from 90- plus cities to Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport.

Once aloft, guests enjoy complimentary cocktails, and on special occasions, like New Year’s Eve, flight attendants may break out the champagne. Premium-class customers are served in-flight meals, like charcuterie boards.

Because everyone’s bound for the Beau, they form instant bonds, says Brooke Pardoe, executive director of charter services. “We get everyone from high rollers to casual gamblers to leisure travelers coming for the golf or the shows. A lot of groups like to come together, and they have a fun time on the plane.”

Once on the ground, there’s no need to worry about baggage claim or connecting transportation. “We pick up their luggage from the airport and deliver it to their rooms,” says Pardoe. “When they get here, their rooms are already assigned and their keys are ready. We started with a pretty simple concept—getting guests from point A to point B— and turned it into something engaging and great for our customers.” This mode of travel is so carefree, she says, first-timers often become frequent flyers.

Pardoe’s grandfather was a Delta pilot and her grandmother a flight attendant; her parents also are licensed pilots. But she had little interest in aviation until she came to the Beau, returning to the workforce after several years as a stay-at-home mom. As a front desk agent, Pardoe saw first-hand the importance of MGMAir to resort occupancy; its fleet of Sun Country Boeing 737-800 jets make up about 25 percent of total air traffic through Gulfport-Biloxi.

Her favorite part of the job? Scheduling, which relies not on algorithms but the expertise of Pardoe and her 16-person team. “We literally sit around a whiteboard with maps, calendars and data, and piece together the puzzle, market by market,” she says. “It’s more than numbers on a spreadsheet—it’s years of knowledge. For example, I don’t schedule too many flights to the Midwest during harvest season, or bring in a group from Green Bay when there’s a Packers’ home game.” She calls her job “part art and part science. And when the flights sell out, it’s the best feeling, because it means we solved the puzzle.”

Pardoe is now all-in on the family business, and is working to earn her private pilot’s license. She eventually hopes to be seaplane-rated— and who can blame her, in such a beautiful coastal location?

“There’s nothing like that moment when your wheels leave the runway and you climb into the air,” she says. “It’s a perspective you can’t really get anywhere else.”

She is thankful to have landed in this job, a “fascinating mix of aviation, marketing and hospitality.”

“MGM and Beau Rivage have been fantastic to me. Anytime I’m interested in learning something new or reaching out for an opportunity, they always support me. I’m happy to be here.”

TABIA LOVE-TAYLOR

Wheels of Fortune

TABIA LOVE-TAYLOR, Slot Operations Shift Manager

Ready to hit the gaming floor? The experience at Beau Rivage is unparalleled. The 85,000-square-foot casino is equipped with almost 1,300 slot machines, 78 table games, a poker room, a BetMGM Sportsbook, and an elegant high-limit lounge. In September, USA Today readers ranked the Beau among the Top 10 best casinos in the U.S. It was also named the best casino outside Las Vegas, and No. 5 nationwide for slots.

Tabia Love-Taylor and her hard-working crew are part of the reason. “We’re there for the guests,” says Love-Taylor, a slot operations shift manager now working the four-to- midnight shift. With eight casino resorts in Biloxi, “They didn’t have to choose us,” she says. “But when they do, we want them to come back. As long as we still put a smile on their faces, we’re doing our job.”

Love-Taylor always dreamed of a career in education. That all changed when she spent a college gap year working the slot floor at another local casino. Then she moved to the Beau. “And I just fell in love,” she enthuses. “I loved the excitement and the pace. I loved seeing the machines turning and the lights everywhere.”

Now a 23-year veteran, she especially cherishes her relationships with guests. “I love when they return and actually look for me. And if I see somebody I remember, I go up and say, ‘Hey, Mrs. Johnson, Mr. Johnson, how’s your family?’ They’re so amazed that I remembered them from one visit.”

She is justly proud of the slot floor, which offers the latest and greatest titles and tech, and a dedicated Buffalo Zone with dozens of the popular Aristocrat slot machines. “If there’s a new game out there, we’re usually one of the first properties in Mississippi to have it,” Love-Taylor points out. “We want our guests who play at the Bellagio or Borgata to find their favorite games here, so they don’t miss a beat.”

The former athletic coach is “big on teamwork,” and committed to helping her team members achieve at the highest level. “I look for the strengths in everybody, then make sure we amplify those strengths on the job. It could be, ‘You’re a good smiler. The guests love that.’ ‘You’re a good engager. Let’s promote that.’”

The newlywed is now pursuing her master’s degree in hospitality and gaming at the University of Las Vegas, studying online while working the busy evening shift. Hectic? You bet. But clearly, she wouldn’t have it any other way.

“I felt supported by MGM to become a leader,” she says. “Any time I encountered a roadblock, somebody was there to help me knock it down.”

Kim Lyon

A Seat at the Table

KIM LYON, Table Games Operation Manager

On the table-games side of the floor, you may encounter Kim Lyon, also an industry veteran. Lyon got her start in Atlantic City at the dawn of New Jersey gaming, in 1980. After turns as a dealer at both Harrah’s and Trump Plaza, she worked her way west to casinos in Las Vegas and Laughlin, NV, before heading due south, to Mississippi.

“I spent many years at the Goldstrike,” an MGM Resorts property in Tunica, Lyon recalls. “Then fortunately, I had the opportunity to come to the Beau.” Here she oversees a table game selection that includes blackjack, roulette, craps, popular options like mini- and midi-baccarat, and poker variations like Pai Gow, Ultimate Texas Hold’em and of course, Mississippi Stud.

A bank of 12 electronic gaming machines are “a bit less intimidating for some players, especially when they’re new to a game and want to see what it’s all about,” she says. For beginners, someone is always on hand to explain the intricacies of a game. “Sometimes it’s easier to talk to that floorman or manager and say, ‘Hey, I saw you just added this side bet. How do you play that?’ We’re there to answer any of your questions—not just about the games, but about the property in general.”

The Beau is unique among casino resorts, says Lyon. “It’s not just one person, one team, one department. I truly work with individuals who are passionate about their jobs. The communication, camaraderie and respect people have for each other is like nowhere else.

“Everybody has this genuine interest to make the Beau the best it can be. That’s what makes it magical.”

Kimberly Pelaez

The Matchmaker

KIMBERLY PELAEZ, Vice President of Human Resources

“ We have a very tenured employee base,” says Kimberly Pelaez, vice president of human resources at Beau Rivage. Day one employees aside, “Our average employee has been here more than eight years. Our average leader, supervisor and above, has been here more than 10 years. That’s really special. We’ve worked alongside each other for a very long time, building those relationships, being there to support one another.”

That culture of longevity starts at square one, during new-hire orientations. “That’s when we start talking about what we call ‘show service,’” Pelaez observes. “It’s not just about how we treat our guests, but how we treat each other. If we get that right, we’ll provide the same experience to our guests.”

The proof can be found in consistently enthusiastic customer surveys. “We have the highest net promoter score in our company, which is how our guests tell us we’re doing it right,” says Pelaez. The Beau also gets high marks on travel sites like Tripadvisor, where patrons hail the “first-class food and lodging” and “over-the-top friendliness.” One commenter raved about the balmy Gulf Coast location, with abundant sightings of sea birds and dolphins.

The landscape is familiar to Pelaez, a Biloxi native whose family members once served as caretakers of the historic Ship Island Lighthouse off Gulfport. She started her gaming career as a college student, working in hotel operations at the Beau. Since then, “I’ve had 15 different roles within the organization and paid both for college and my HR certification through our tuition reimbursement program,” she says. “This company will invest as much in you as you want to invest in yourself.”

When evaluating prospective employees, “We look for certain levels of education or experience, depending on the role. But we look for more than that, too: someone who fits our culture and is passionate about creating those guest experiences. We like to have a little fun at work too—this is hospitality, after all. People come here on vacation or to celebrate special occasions. We want our employees to be a part of that and look for ways to make it even better.

“I love to talk about this property, our team and the work that we do,” she says. “It’s that Southern hospitality that our guests really enjoy and love.”

After more than 25 years on the job, she refers to her colleagues as family. “Over the years, we’ve watched each other’s families grow up. It’s not in just how we support one another, but also how we challenge one another to think about things differently, to try new things. Ultimately, it makes us better.”

Sara Chatham

Sheer Indulgence

SARA CHATHAM, Director of Retail & Spa-Salon

Sara Chatham presides over what is probably the most coveted experience at a luxury resort: the spa.

In 2024, the Spa at Beau Rivage ranked an impressive No. 5 on a list of Top 100 Spas compiled by Spas of America. Among the premium services: hydra-facials, Gua Sha facials, signature mani-pedis, and deluxe blowouts to prepare guests for the day or evening. Of course, there’s a whole menu of therapeutic massage: CBD and Himalayan salt stone massage, couples massage, and a more vigorous athletic massage that enhances range of motion and helps overworked muscles recover.

“Personally, I think it’s important to work massage into your regular routine, and set that time aside for yourself,” says Chatham. “You’re not looking at your phone. Your eyes are closed. It’s a digital disconnect that really does wonders for both the mind and body.”

The Biloxi native started at Beau Rivage as an intern, worked in bell service and the valet department during college, then moved on to Marriott properties in New Orleans and Mobile. But the road eventually led her back home, to the Beau.

“Hospitality is definitely in my DNA,” she says. “There is also a certain responsibility in helping someone unwind, celebrate, heal and feel seen.”

The salon and spa areas were part of the recent renovations, with freshened décor that reflects the resort’s Gulf Coast backdrop. There are coastal hues, lots of blues, calming neutrals and abundant natural light. “It’s just a really fresh and crisp design, calm and relaxing,” says Chatham. Guests can decompress in the sauna or steam room, then curl up in the solarium, wrapped up in thick, luxurious robes.

Such pampering can almost feel sinful. “But in this world, where everything’s so hustle- bustle, it’s important to schedule time just for you,” says Chatham. “Relaxation is intentional. The days go by really fast, and you’ll miss the goodness if you don’t purposely slow things down sometimes.”

Chatham prizes the relationships she’s created with guests of the Beau. “We see people again and again, and there are lots of hugs among the staff and repeat clientele,” she says. “But it’s always so fun to talk to someone who’s coming here for the first time. There’s a big wow factor.”

BE OUR GUEST

When Kim Lyon first broke into the casino business, women leaders were, in the Southern parlance, “as scarce as hen’s teeth.” Thankfully, that has changed, and for the better. Organizations like MGM Resorts value women’s unique ability to take care of business, vault obstacles and solve problems.

“We’re very good at juggling,” Lyon says. “We balance home life, work schedules, daycare, getting kids to and from events. We bring a unique ability to the table—the problem- solving ability. Sometimes we have to work a little harder. I call it sisterhood.”

That blend of skills, plus a heaping helping of Southern hospitality, have made this Gulf Coast resort the go-to destination for generations of visitors. “It’s the Beau,” Lyon says simply. “The one and only Beau.”

Funner by Design

Jill Barrett Leads with Purpose and Play at Harrah’s Resort Southern California

BY LISA ROBERTSON-DZIEDZIC

When it comes to leadership in the gaming industry, Jill Barrett, senior vice president and general manager of Harrah’s Resort Southern California, embodies what it means to evolve, empower—and, true to the resort’s playful spirit— have fun along the way.

With more than three decades in gaming, Barrett has witnessed the industry’s transformation firsthand and helped shape its evolution through her grounded and forward-thinking leadership.

“When I started in the gaming business some 35 years ago, yes, it was a male-dominated industry,” she recalls. “But I never thought of that as something that would hold me back. Without realizing it, I forged ahead with a steady focus on my long-term goals. Maybe ignorance is bliss,” she says with a laugh. “That said, you need to be open to change, constantly evolving and adapting quickly to new challenges. I’ve always stayed true to myself.”

That authenticity is the cornerstone of Barrett’s leadership philosophy. “Conduct yourself with the utmost integrity and learn and grow from the mistakes you make along the way,” she says. “It’s okay to ask for help and to acknowledge you don’t have all the answers. You step into a leadership role because you genuinely care about the people you serve.”

Barrett’s influence shines throughout Harrah’s Resort Southern California—from its vibrant ‘Funner, California’ branding to the property’s next major evolution: the renovation of its High Limit Gaming Room, set to debut in summer 2026.

“We were inspired to create a more immersive and luxurious experience for our guests,” Barrett says. “At Harrah’s Resort SoCal, we pride ourselves on never sitting still. We’re introducing a refreshed design, elevated beverage offerings, modern technology, and even our very own exclusive Blanton’s Barrett Bourbon.”

JILL BARRETT

The redesigned High Limit Room will feature more than 100 new slot machines—including 12 bar-top machines—along with classic table games like Double Deck Blackjack, Baccarat and Pai Gow. “Creating a welcoming yet luxurious atmosphere was top of mind,” Barrett explains.

Artist rendering of Harrah’s Resort Southern California’s new High Limit Room.

“It was incredibly important that we craft an inviting environment where players can celebrate what Harrah’s Resort SoCal is all about— FUN!”

But “Funner, California” is more than clever branding—it’s a lifestyle and mindset. “Funner is a constant reminder not to take life too seriously,” Barrett says. “Each of our celebrity mayors—from David Hasselhoff and Jane Lynch to our current Mayor of Funner, Martin Short—has brought their own personality and humor to the role, helping us showcase that spirit in a uniquely entertaining way. They each add a sense of wonder and imagination to every guest experience.”

For first-time visitors, Barrett suggests diving right into the property’s signature experiences. “Spend an afternoon at DIVE, our pool complex complete with a swim-up bar and lazy river, then enjoy dinner at Gordon Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen—it’s always a showstopper,” she says. “And check out our entertainment lineup at The Events Center— we’ve got some stellar acts already lined up for 2026.”

The line-up of headliners at Harrah’s Resort Southern California is nothing short of stellar, indeed. Starting off with a comedic punch, Iliza Shlesinger brings her razor-sharp stand-up to the stage on Dec. 7. On Jan. 16, spiritual TV star Theresa Caputo brings “Live! The Experience” to the venue, followed two nights later by the legendary Motown powerhouse pairing of The Temptations & The Four Tops on Jan. 18. Comedy takes the spotlight again with Andrew Santino on Jan. 30, before the romantic soft-rock icons Air Supply mark their 50th anniversary celebration on Feb. 15. Rounding out the schedule, ventriloquist superstar Jeff Dunham appears March 19, and country great Clint Black takes the stage on March 29.

At the heart of it all, Barrett credits her team for bringing the “Funner” philosophy to life every day. “Our people and our guest experience are at the heart of everything we do,” she says. “We’ve perfected the art of Funner by creating immersive experiences for both casual visitors and VIP players. When you lead with passion and purpose, that energy becomes contagious.”

Looking ahead, Barrett remains focused on the continued evolution of the Funner brand. “We’re honored to be a place where adults can laugh, relax and let loose,” she says. “We’re always exploring new ways to elevate the guest experience—from the Dive Inn renovations to the upcoming High Limit Room. Funner isn’t just a marketing campaign— it’s our culture. And that’s something I’m incredibly proud to lead.”

The Seneca Difference

COO Kimberlee Dunlop Elevates the Seneca Gaming Experience

BY LISA ROBERTSON-DZIEDZIC

When Kimberlee Dunlop was appointed chief operating officer of Seneca Gaming Corporation in May, she embraced the role with her signature blend of optimism, focus and collaboration. For Dunlop, leadership is not about standing above a team—it’s about standing alongside them. “The COO role has enabled me to get more hands on with our operations and work closely with the team,” she explains. “Every day there is a new challenge and an opportunity to learn from it. I am inspired by our team members who bring energy to the floor and all areas of our operations day in and day out.”

Kimberlee Dunlop

That spirit of teamwork and mutual inspiration has been a defining theme throughout Dunlop’s career with Seneca Gaming, which operates three premier properties across Western New York: Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino, Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino and Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino. Each destination offers its own distinct personality, from the grandeur of Niagara Falls to the laid-back serenity of the Allegheny Mountains. “I love each of our properties for the experiences and character they offer. Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino is our biggest property and a true tourist destination, just blocks away from the world-famous Niagara Falls. The energy and excitement are evident from the time you walk through the door. Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino has game-like atmosphere right in the heart of downtown Buffalo. Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino is a relaxing getaway—a true gem tucked in between the Allegheny mountains, quiet countryside and beautiful surroundings. While they are all distinct properties, all three are rooted in the same exceptional service we provide our guests. That’s what we like to call the Seneca difference.”

As COO, Dunlop has been instrumental in initiatives designed to enhance efficiency, satisfaction and growth—both for guests and for the more than 3,000 team members who make the Seneca experience possible. “Efficiency and guest satisfaction begin with team member satisfaction,” she says. Under her leadership, Seneca Gaming recently rolled out a new digital Human Capital Management platform, streamlining processes across the employee life cycle. The corporation also launched a comprehensive customer service program that Dunlop calls a long-term focus for the organization. “We’ve emphasized the importance of being our BEST,” she says. “It takes a commitment to customer service and consistency, and I’m excited to see the team buy into the program. It makes such a difference with our customers and the experience they have throughout their visit.”

That commitment to excellence continues to be recognized on a national level. Both Seneca Niagara and Seneca Allegany recently earned the prestigious AAA Four Diamond designation—an honor Dunlop and her team hold dear. “Our team is so proud to have that Four Diamond recognition because it sets us apart and defines us as ‘world class,’” she says. “Our properties continually elevate the standard for luxury accommodations and service in our market. When guests choose to stay with us, they know they can expect the highest level of comfort and overall experience anywhere.”

Part of maintaining that high standard is keeping things fresh and forward-looking. Dunlop is currently overseeing a multi-property refresh that begins this winter at Seneca Allegany. “Guests will be excited to see a re-imagined Seneca Café and Thunder Mountain Buffet,” she notes, “followed by improvements at Seneca Niagara later next year.” And when it comes to the resort experience, she’s quick to highlight what already sets Seneca Gaming apart. “Our fine dining restaurants, especially The Western Door steakhouse, are the best in Western New York! Our spa & salons at both Seneca Allegany and Seneca Niagara are a real treat and offer the added extras that many other spas cannot offer. If that’s not enough, try a round of golf at Seneca Hickory Stick Golf Course, an exceptional Robert Trent Jones II layout and one of the best courses around!”

Beyond operations, Dunlop is passionate about leadership— particularly the role of women in gaming and tribal enterprise. “Female leadership means a lot of things to me, but mostly confidence and the ability to multi-task,” she says. “Any woman in leadership knows that their work never ends when they leave the office and they often juggle hundreds of things, professionally & personally—for the company, themselves, their family, etc. It’s all about wearing multiple hats, knowing how to prioritize and being able to use your voice.”

That philosophy extends to her mentoring style. “I love mentoring and supporting other women and believe it is so critically important for us to support each other,” Dunlop shares. Her experience as a youth soccer and basketball coach reflects that belief: “I felt strongly that girls could be inspired by having a female coach—someone who could both push them and understand them.” Today, she continues to meet regularly with women across the organization, offering guidance, encouragement and confidence to take the next step in their careers.

Looking ahead, Dunlop is deeply optimistic about what’s next for Seneca Gaming Corporation. “What excites me most, and what is most meaningful to me, is that our operations make an important difference,” she reflects. “I know how exceptional our properties and operations are, and how dynamic the challenges of our industry can be. I’m excited every day to work with our entire team to ensure Seneca Gaming Corporation is best positioned to continue making an important impact for our guests, our team members, our region in Western New York, and, notably, for the Seneca Nation and our people.”

For Dunlop, leadership is more than a role—it’s a responsibility to serve, inspire and empower. And in doing so, she continues to set a powerful example of what strong, authentic and compassionate leadership looks like in gaming today.

Vision at the Summit

Mary Lou Patterson Leads Snoqualmie Casino & Hotel to New Heights

When Mary Lou Patterson looks out over the Cascade Mountains from the new hotel tower at Snoqualmie Casino & Hotel, she sees more than breathtaking beauty—she sees a dream fulfilled. Under her visionary leadership, Snoqualmie has transformed into a full- spectrum entertainment destination, combining the excitement of gaming with the sophistication of a world-class resort experience.

Nestled just 30 minutes from downtown Seattle, WA, Snoqualmie Casino & Hotel has officially stepped into a new era. On Aug. 8, the iconic destination celebrated the grand opening of its luxury hotel tower—an elegant, modern retreat that brings elevated hospitality to the heart of the Pacific Northwest. Earlier in the summer, Snoqualmie Casino & Hotel unveiled another major enhancement: a new nonsmoking gaming floor. Located adjacent to the hotel lobby, the sleek, modern space features nearly 400 of today’s most popular slot machines, along with a dedicated smoke-free valet entrance.

Guests can still enjoy the property’s enclosed non-smoking gaming zone near Falls Buffet, and now all restaurants on property are 100% non-smoking as well. “We’ve heard our guests loud and clear,” Patterson said. “This expansion reflects our continued commitment to creating an atmosphere that’s exciting, comfortable and inclusive.”

Mary Lou Patterson

The recent $400 million expansion marks a bold new chapter for Snoqualmie Casino & Hotel, elevating the property into a full-spectrum entertainment destination. Along with its expanded amenities, the resort now features Washington’s first sportsbook, nearly 1,700 slot machines, 58 classic table games including blackjack, roulette and baccarat, five distinctive dining venues, a luxurious cigar lounge, and a 2,000-seat entertainment and convention venue that hosts national acts and large-scale events. Set against the dramatic natural beauty of the valley, Snoqualmie seamlessly blends the excitement of gaming with the sophistication of a modern mountain retreat.

A trailblazing female CEO in a historically maledominated industry, Patterson leads with authenticity, collaboration and vision. “The role of women in leadership has never been more crucial, especially in such a male-dominated industry,” she says. “Women bring a wide range of skills that drive innovation, foster inclusivity and cultural preservation. As the gaming industry continues to evolve, qualities such as resilience, collaboration and empathy have become essential in shaping successful workplaces.”

Her leadership philosophy centers on empowerment and connection. “Today, leadership goes beyond making decisions—it’s about cultivating an environment where both team members and guests feel heard, valued and inspired,” Patterson explains. “In hospitality, exceptional guest experiences start with engaged and empowered employees. Women in leadership exemplify this philosophy, leading with purpose and creating lasting impact across the industry.”

From the gaming floor to the mountain views, Patterson’s influence is visible everywhere—proof that with vision, passion and perseverance, leadership can truly reshape the landscape. Under her direction, Snoqualmie Casino & Hotel isn’t just expanding its footprint—it’s redefining what it means to lead, to serve and to inspire.

Leading the Way at Valley Forge

Bold ideas and genuine hospitality drive the success of Valley Forge Casino Resort’s inspiring female leaders

BY LISA ROBERTSON-DZIEDZIC

At Valley Forge Casino Resort in Valley Forge, PA, leadership shines through the vision and expertise of Martha Morales, vice president and general manager, and Joyce Serrian, vice president of gaming operations.

Together, these two powerhouse executives are steering the property through a remarkable transformation—one that blends innovation with heart, and sophistication with the warmth of genuine hospitality. From Morales’ focus on community, culture and vision, to Serrian’s dedication to mentorship and operational excellence, both leaders share a passion for empowering their teams and creating experiences that resonate with every guest who walks through the doors.

Leading with Heart and Vision

MARTHA MORALES, Vice President & General Manager, Valley Forge Casino Resort

When Martha Morales was named vice president and general manager of Valley Forge Casino Resort, it marked not just a professional milestone—but a deeply personal one.

Martha Morales

“This role is meaningful to me on so many levels,” she reflects. “Personally, it’s a reflection of my family’s journey and everything my parents sacrificed to give me opportunities they never had. My mother worked as a guest room attendant and my father in construction, so I grew up surrounded by hard work and humility.

Professionally, it’s a privilege to lead such a dynamic team and help shape the guest experience at Valley Forge. I take pride in representing women and the Latino community in leadership, and I hope my story shows others that it’s possible to rise, stay true to your values, and bring others with you along the way.”

For Morales, the road to leadership began in Las Vegas, where she honed her skills at The Orleans and other major properties on the Strip. “Las Vegas was an incredible training ground,” she says. “I learned the importance of operational excellence, team culture, and the art of balancing entertainment with hospitality. In Vegas, you’re constantly surrounded by innovation, competition and high expectations—and that shaped my leadership approach. Here in Pennsylvania, I’ve taken those lessons and applied them with a focus on community, accessibility and personal connection.”

That community connection has become the hallmark of Morales’ leadership at Valley Forge, where a sweeping, multi-phase property transformation is currently underway. The project includes a full renovation of the Stardust Tower, an all-new Food Hall, the Valley Spa, and the introduction of the Stress Factory Comedy Club. “The most rewarding part has been seeing our vision come to life through our team’s dedication,” she shares. “Every renovation—whether it’s a redesigned guest room or a reimagined lobby—represents a collective effort to elevate the guest experience. Transformation isn’t just about buildings; it’s about people believing in the future of this property.”

Guests can enjoy the all-new Valley Forge Food Hall, featuring a diverse mix of American, Mexican, and Asian favorites, along with live laughs at the popular Stress Factory Comedy Club.

That belief extends to the exciting enhancements still to come. “We’ve completed the full renovation of the Stardust Tower, featuring 253 redesigned guest rooms and a refreshed lobby inspired by mid-century Las Vegas glamor,” Morales explains. “The new Valley Forge Food Hall is open, offering everything from American favorites to Mexican and Asian cuisine. This summer, we opened the Stress Factory Comedy Club and debuted the Valley Spa—a tranquil retreat offering massages, facials, and wellness treatments. Looking ahead, guests can expect an upscale steakhouse and cigar lounge, and a complete reimagining of our casino floor. It’s an exciting time to be part of Valley Forge’s story.”

That reimagined casino floor will soon become a centerpiece of the resort’s guest experience. “We’re giving the main gaming floor a full refresh, and guests are going to notice the difference right away,” she says with enthusiasm. “The look is much more modern and resort- inspired, with bleached oak paneling, travertine floors, and pops of aquamarine and terra cotta. One of the standout features is the oval cut-crystal chandeliers above the table games— they add a touch of elegance and make the area feel more upscale. We’ve also added a new cocktail lounge that seats 72, complete with a custom DJ booth, and a semi-private high-limit slot area with its own bar.”

Of course, with so much change happening at once, Morales knows that maintaining the resort’s culture of service is crucial. “Communication and collaboration are everything,” she says. “I believe in being transparent with our team—keeping everyone informed about what’s changing and why it matters. When people feel included, they take ownership. Even during renovations, the guest experience begins and ends with the people who bring it to life every day.”

That people-first philosophy also informs how she mentors and encourages women in the gaming industry. “Stay curious, stay humble, and don’t be afraid to raise your hand,” she advises. “There’s incredible power in asking questions and learning from others. Early in my career, I was often the only woman in the room—but instead of seeing that as a disadvantage, I saw it as an opportunity to bring a new perspective. Build relationships at every level, because leadership is about people first. And don’t let fear of not knowing hold you back—we grow by showing up authentically and doing the work.”

It’s a mindset that has helped Morales shape Valley Forge’s evolution while keeping the guest experience at the heart of every decision. For first-time visitors, she recommends taking time to explore it all. “Start your day with breakfast and coffee from Café Primo in our new Food Hall, then explore everything the property has to offer—whether it’s live entertainment at the Stress Factory Comedy Club or a relaxing stay in one of our newly renovated Stardust Tower rooms,” she suggests. “Our pool and nightlife scene are great draws during the summer months. My best advice is to take your time—there’s so much to discover.”

After years in the fast-paced Las Vegas market, Morales says the biggest difference in Pennsylvania is the sense of connection. “In Las Vegas, you’re serving millions of visitors from around the world. Here, we have the privilege of getting to know our guests—they return often, celebrate milestones with us, and feel like part of the Valley Forge family,” she says. “That connection shapes how we deliver service. We’re focused on creating meaningful, memorable experiences that make guests want to return not just for the games, but for the people.”

Looking ahead, Morales’ vision for Valley Forge is as ambitious as it is heartfelt. “My goal is to make Valley Forge Casino Resort a premier destination in the region—one that blends world-class hospitality with the warmth and accessibility our guests love,” she says. “Beyond the physical transformation, my focus is on culture—building a team that feels inspired, empowered, and proud to be part of what we’re creating together. When our team thrives, our guests feel it, and that’s the foundation of everything we do.”

For Martha Morales, leadership isn’t just about managing a property—it’s about inspiring people, honoring her roots and creating an environment where excellence and inclusivity go hand in hand. And under her guidance, Valley Forge Casino Resort is not only transforming its spaces—it’s redefining what hospitality looks like in Pennsylvania’s gaming market.

JOYCE SERRIAN

JOYCE SERRIAN, Vice President of Gaming Operations, Valley Forge Casino Resort

Few leaders in gaming embody the phrase “rising through the ranks” quite like Joyce Serrian, vice president of gaming operations at Valley Forge Casino Resort. From her start as a PBX operator to her current role overseeing one of Pennsylvania’s most dynamic gaming floors, Serrian’s path is a masterclass in hard work, adaptability and purpose-driven leadership.

“Having worked in almost every area of operations—from hotel and food service to gaming—I’ve gained an understanding of how all parts of the business connect to the guest experience,” Serrian explains. “When you’ve worked the phones, dealt the cards, and managed the floor, you understand how each role impacts the overall energy of the casino. It’s made me a more hands-on and empathetic leader.”

That grounded approach fuels Serrian’s leadership philosophy: leave people and places better than you found them. “I apply that philosophy by focusing on mentorship and development,” she says. “My goal is to help my team grow into confident, capable leaders who understand every aspect of gaming operations. If we finish the day stronger than we started, I know we’re doing something right.”

At Valley Forge, Serrian plays a key role in the resort’s multi-phase transformation—from the sleek new Stardust Tower and lobby to the lively Valley Forge Food Hall and Stress Factory Comedy Club. “The renovations have elevated the entire resort experience,” she notes. “Every improvement was designed with guest flow in mind—creating a smoother, more dynamic experience throughout the property.”

Looking ahead, Serrian is especially excited about the property’s upcoming upgrades, including a remodeled tavern, a new steakhouse and cigar lounge, and a fully modernized casino floor. “These enhancements give our guests more reasons to stay, play, and return,” she says. “We’re creating an environment that’s immersive, comfortable, and built around connection.”

For Serrian, connection is the secret to great hospitality. “Our dealers, slot attendants, and hosts build real relationships with our guests— remembering their preferences, celebrating their wins, and making every visit personal,” she says. “We focus on connection, not just service.”

When asked what advice she offers young women looking to follow in her footsteps, Serrian doesn’t hesitate: “Be curious, stay adaptable, and learn everything you can. Don’t shy away from gaming-focused roles that have traditionally been male-dominated. If you know your craft, treat people with respect, and bring professionalism to every interaction, you’ll earn credibility quickly. And find mentors who inspire you—because none of us get here alone.”

Serrian remains energized by what’s ahead—for both her team and the property. “What excites me most is the opportunity to keep innovating while developing our people,” she says. “Seeing our team embrace the future—and knowing I can play a part in that growth—is what motivates me every day.”

“The Philadelphia area has always felt like home to me,” said Barkley. “We’re creating a spot that’s fun, comfortable, and full of personality—a place where people can unwind, share a great meal, and feel that same energy and connection that make this community so special.”

The new steakhouse will blend modern elegance with personal touches from Barkley’s storied career, while The Humidor cigar lounge will offer a sophisticated, club-like retreat complete with a walk-in humidor, private lockers and bar service.

“Charles Barkley’s personality, charisma and love for Philadelphia make him an incredible partner,” said Martha Morales, Vice President and General Manager of Valley Forge Casino Resort. “We’re honored to bring his vision to life.”

Barkley will play an active role in shaping the restaurant’s concept and menu, and Boyd Gaming will feature spirits from his Redmont Distilling Co. across its properties. As part of the collaboration, Boyd will also make an annual donation to The Charles Barkley Foundation, supporting education and historically Black colleges and universities.
